10 stores penalized by trade office

AT LEAST 10 retail stores in Zamboanga City were penalized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provincial office, for violating trade rules regulating mandatory products.

Mandatory products are those critical products that affect the lives and properties of the consumers. These are subjected to testing and evaluation required by the Bureau of Standards under DTI, according to DTI Provincial Manager Rolando Acuna.

He said a product standard certification is issued after full compliance with the requirements.

At present, the DTI is more focused on their campaign against substandard Christmas lights that can cause accidents, like conflagration.

Acuna revealed that Christmas lights were recently confiscated from unscrupulous store owners in the city.

Acuna said all the 10 retailers were slapped with fines of not less than P500 and not more than P150,000, depending on the types of violations they incurred.

If violations are being repeated, cancellation of their permits and other stiff penalties are imposed, Acuna said.

He said businessmen were already informed of the requirements they have to comply with during a dialog his office held the other week, following the November 1 expanded VAT implementation by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

"We want the customers to get their money's worth in buying products," Acuna announced, as he assured their continuous monitoring of all prime commodities for public sale.

He urged customers to ask receipts from stores that are not issuing such requirement mandated by the BIR, and to check the expanded VAT if doubly collected from them.

He also reminded businessmen to apply from their DTI office for an import commodity clearance for their imported products. He said these products are being tested by their office before they are allowed for distribution to the markets. He said this is to insure protection of the buying public from purchasing bogus or imitated products.

Acuna said the DTI has conspicuously posted bulletin boards at both the Sta. Cruz and the old public markets to appraise market-goers of the correct prices of the various selling products.

He said any complainant can call the DTI office through the DTI hotline 9912705.
