City jail reports brisk sales of lanterns
CITY jail warden Chief Insp. Victor Borres said he was elated that the lanterns and other Christmas products produced by inmates at the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center were all sold out.
Borres said that even at this time of crisis, still people flocked to the city jail to buy the inmates' lanterns.
"As early as November, many people came to our establishment to buy the lanterns and still others came here for more orders," Borres said.
The jail warden said that December is one of the happiest months of the year for the inmates because they can really make money out of the lanterns.
He said that since the time of the hostage-taking some years back, all knives and tools being provided to inmates in making lanterns are retrieved immediately after usage.
It will be recalled that an inmate, who was armed with a knife, was shot dead by BJMP guards after taking a woman hostage in his attempt to escape.
The inmate obtained the knife from the lantern-making area.
Borres said that gift-giving and other activities will be held on Christmas Day to also let the inmates feel the joy of the Yuletide season.
