Solon releases allowance checks to 240 scholars
CHRISTMAS came early for some 240 congressional scholars last December 17 when Zamboanga Representative Erbie Fabian handed out their checks representing allowances for the second semester.
The activity, held at the social hall of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), also turned out to be a get together for the beneficiaries and their benefactor.
Congressman Fabian in his message before the distribution of the checks and gifts, exhorted the scholars to study hard and strive to reach their goals in life.
He told the scholars to take the opportunity of attaining good education and becoming productive citizens in the future.
The 240 scholars are taking up various courses either at the WMSU or the Zamboanga State Polytechnic College of Marine Sciences and Technology.
Every semester, they are entitled to P2,500 each for their allowances. The scholars are being facilitated by the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) in the region.
Aside from the 240 scholars, Fabian also subsidizes the studies of some 700 others taking up community-based courses at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda).
Meanwhile, Fabian expressed elation and surprise when the scholars presented him with Christmas cards expressing their appreciation for assistance he extended to them.
The studies of the 1,000 scholars are subsidized by the P1 million allocation from Fabian's Priority Development Assistance (PDA) Fund for 2005.
The Zamboanga solon vowed to continue with the program, stressing that the welfare of the youths is included in his priority agenda.
