P500-T worth of firecrackers seized

THE total haul of the city's continuous drive against the illegal sale and display of powerful firecrackers and pyrotechnics has reached P500,000 as of December 24.

City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. said the campaign being undertaken by the City Hall's community police action center (Compac) in coordination with the anti-vice squad of the City Police will pursue even until New Year's Eve when firecrackers and pyrotechnics would be on brisk sale.

He reiterated that there are only 8 firecracker dealers that were authorized to sell and distribute the items. These dealers passed the requirements of Camp Crame as well as that of City Hall.

"They (vendors) have to get special permits to sell the firecrackers," the administrator emphasized.

The seized firecrackers were being sold and displayed in sidewalks including stalls in the public market and numerous department stores in the city proper.

The operating teams will not slow down in their campaign to ensure that the firecrackers are being disposed of properly and orderly.

Meanwhile, the seized items would be destroyed in public view on December 29 (Thursday) instead of Dec. 28, as earlier scheduled.

Orendain said Mayor Celso Lobregat would be pre-occupied with other activities such as the inauguration of a new building at the waterfront market on the 28th, thus the need to reschedule the same.

The campaign against the unauthorized sale and display of the firecrackers and pyrotechnics is based on an executive order issued by Mayor Lobregat last November11.

The illegal vendors are not penalized for the illegal sale unless they are caught in the act of disposing prohibited items as provided for in Republic Act 7183.

The prohibited firecrackers are the powerful ones, like Super Lolo, Pla-Pla, Kwiton, among others.
