Reflect on the values of Hariraya Hajj: vice mayor
Zamboanga City Vice Mayor Beng Climaco has expressed hopes that the celebration of Eid'l Adha, the Muslim feast of sacrifice, will serve as a fitting occasion for people to reflect on the value of sharing and sacrificing for others.
The vice mayor at the same extended her warmest felicitations and greetings to the Muslim community in Zamboanga City and the entire world on the occasion of Eid'l Adha or the culmination of Hariraya Hajj in Mecca on January 10.
As a tradition, Islam devotees celebrate Eid'l Adha by sharing their riches with the poor, some in the form of money, clothing, meat and other stuff.
"This is a very good practice. We hope we can learn from this practice. It's a thanksgiving to God and sharing of blessings," the lady vice mayor stressed.
It is in the celebration of Eid'l Adha that people--Christians and Muslims, young and old, and regardless of status in life, realize the symbol of sharing with and giving to the poor.
"On this occasion, we greet and congratulate our Muslim brothers and sisters and thank them for sharing with us this beautiful spiritual and religious tradition," the vice mayor added.
One group that undertakes the annual tradition of sharing during Eid'l Adha is the Filipino Turkish Tolerance School, an institution run by the Turkish community. During this day, the Turkish community slaughters hundreds of cattle and shares the meat with indigents in Zamboanga City.
Vice Mayor Climaco has been one of the supporters of the Turkish group during the annual meat sharing activity. (Press release)
