Sibugay holds hybrid rice festival
"SAMA-SAMA sa Magandang Bukas ng Makabagong Agrikultura (Together towards a modern agriculture)" is the theme of the Grand Harvest Festival and Field Tour in a 200-hectare rice field held in Barangay Namnama, Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay last January 4.
Department of Agriculture 9 Executive Director Oscar O. Parawan lauded the efforts of the different sectors in the province headed by Governor George T. Hofer for topping the biggest hybrid production and cluster area. Zamboanga Sibugay has one of the biggest Hybrid rice areas in Mindanao.
Parawan assured hybrid rice farmers that government subsidy at P1,300 per bag and intervention on zinc inputs in areas with zinc deficiency based on the technical evaluation of the Soils laboratory will continue. Other interventions include capability building, training on IPM, season-long training on hybrid rice, intervention on advocacy, information, such as the "University On the Air program" (UOA).
The National Food Administration will continue its marketing assistance, and Quedancor lending corporation will also continue extending credit assistance to farmers, provided they conform with the different requirements of the agency before the input loan will be released.
As added incentive of last cropping season, the DA granted one Multi-Purpose Development Pavement (MPDP) for every 500-hectare area planted with rice.
Parawan said if the national budget for 2006 will be approved, the DA will try to appropriate more funds for the project. He said the DA will continue the program under the locally funded project in coordination with the different Local Government Units.
The festival was also graced by Mayor Expedito B. Gonzales of Imelda, Mayor Freddie I. Chu of Kabasalan, Mayor Arthur W. Luspo of Siay, Mayor Gil D. Rillera of Titay, and Abner Montecalvo, Mindanao focal person for rice and the local officials of Zamboanga Sibugay. (Willie Peñaflor)
