Army honors soldier-athletes
The Philippine Army on Monday honored its own athletes who won medals in the recent 23rd Southeast Asian Games in Manila, officials said.
Officials said at least 37 soldiers who joined the games were promoted and awarded in Fort Bonifacio headquarters.
Maj. Gen. Alexander Yano, Army chief of staff, said at least three dozen soldiers who joined and won in the games were promoted to the next rank and awarded military merit medals.
"They bring us pride and honor, and today we honored our proud soldiers," he said.
He said those who won gold medals were promoted to the next rank. Soldiers who bagged silver and bronze were awarded the military merit medals.
About one-third of 300 Filipino athletes who participated in the games are Army soldiers, including the country's first gold medallist Maristela Torres.
