Cemetery, children's code top council priority list
Vice Mayor Beng Climaco said the proposed cemetery ordinance and children's code top the list of priority measures to be tackled by the Zamboanga City Council during the first quarter of this year.
The council will formally buckle down to work Saturday, when it meets for its maiden session at its new and imposing building along R.T. Lim Boulevard.
"Having a new building is a reason for us to work harder," the vice mayor declared. She stressed that the priorities targeted in 2005 and the new ones that will be introduced or filed could be well accomplished this year with a new and bigger space for deliberation and legislation purposes.
The council will also consider the request of barangay officials to expedite approval of the proposed law regulating the operation of videoke and karaoke machines in the city.
There are also proposals from the department heads such as the city treasurer for the council to study the possibility of increasing the rates or fees in the utilization of the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex in Baliwasan and the city coliseum in Tetuan.
According to Vice Mayor Climaco, the proposed revenue measures would not only help make the two facilities an income generating source for the city but it would also prepare the grandstand and the coliseum for the different activities set to be held here in the days to come.
Aside from the carry over targets of 2005, the council is also set to fast track the enactment of new measures such as the proposed ordinance naming the butterfly garden in Pasonanca as Jardin de Maria Clara and the proposed law declaring April 26 every year as Dia de Maria Clara Lobregat.
"We look forward to a hardworking City Council with these targets to be met," the lady vice mayor added.
The presiding officer is also set to report on the council's 2005 accomplishments during the maiden session Saturday when Mayor Celso Lobregat will deliver his state of the city address (SOCA).
Congressman Erbie Fabian will also deliver a speech during the maiden session.
