Top Zambo officials condemn Isabela mayor's assassination

THE two highest officials of Zamboanga City have condemned the killing of Isabela City Mayor Luis Biel II, who was shot dead by a suicide gunman, shortly after 12p.m. Friday, March 3.

What’s your opinion on Arroyo’s emergency rule? Post comment.

In a statement to the media, Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat described the killing of Biel as a dastardly act that has snuffed out the life of a dedicate public servant.

Lobregat said he himself has ordered the increase of security to prevent any similar attempt to assassinate him or other city government officials.

Independent sources said that like Biel, Lobregat has been receiving threats from groups, which resent his policies that are geared to bring order and progress in Zamboanga City.

Congressman Erbie Fabian also condemned the gun slaying of Biel, which he described as senseless and that must be thoroughly investigated so that the mastermind should be brought to the bar of justice.

At the same time Fabian called on the police and the Task Force Zamboanga to double their efforts in strictly enforcing the gun ban in Zamboanga City to prevent any similar incident.

"We appeal to the police and the Task Force Zamboanga to thoroughly check all suspicious persons for firearms," Fabian said.

Fabian said Isabela City lost a good leader who had been working hard to make the city progressive and peaceful.

Both Lobregat and Fabian gave their condolence to the family of the late mayor and to the people of Isabela.
