Bayanihan '06 serves over 1,000 in Sulu

MEDICAL and dental needs of over a thousand residents of Talipao, Sulu province were served by combined efforts of the Army's 55th Infantry Battalion, United States Joint Special Operations Task Force Philippines (JSOTF-P), and Sulu Integrated Provincial Hospital staff.

The daylong Medical and Dental Civic Action Program (Medcap) in Talipao National High School gathered residents in need of health services at Barangays Bilaan and Samak in Talipao headed by Hji. Lanoh Tulawie and Hji. Darren Limpasan.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

JSOTF-Philippines (Forward) commander Lt. Col. James McAllister, in his address to Talipao citizens, said the military forces of both the Philippines and the United States are continuing the "trend of friendship" to provide care to the children, the injured, and the elderly; to help guarantee a more secure future for residents; and to help fight lawless elements and terrorists.

"We are here to continue strengthening our long-standing friendship, and assist the Armed Forces of the Philippines in bringing to you security, economic development, and continued positive change," McAllister said. McAllister challenged the locals to "help us to help you."

Talipao Mayor Tambrin Tulawie, who was represented by his wife Hja. Sitti Raya Tulawie, expressed gratitude to the Philippine and US militaries for the efforts and attention given to the two barangays as part of the Bayanihan program.

Newly designated 55th IB Commander Lt. Col. Rainer Omayao also said the Philippine military is working hand in hand with local leaders to rebuild Bilaan Central School, which has a worn-out state that is at present not conducive for learning.

"We hope to have these classrooms ready when school opens. We have delivered the raw materials to the barangay leaders, so their counterpart would be to provide the manpower to renovate the schools," Omayao said.

The joint efforts of the RP and US forces in Talipao are in line with the combined annual military exercises between the two countries, as agreed upon under the Mutual Defense Treaty.
