City speeds up fire victims' relocation
THE City Government of Zamboanga is fast tracking the relocation of over 100 families affected by the fire in Paniran, last year, as the Central Bank of the Philippines announced plans to fence its property at the old main City High School now being utilized by the victims.
City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo said the city's Housing and Land Management Office has been tasked to expedite the resettlement of the Paniran fire victims to Sta. Catalina.
According to Barredo, the old City High School-main building near Sta. Barbara, which is used as temporary shelter for the victims, will soon be fenced to pave way for the construction of a building of the Central Bank.
The over 100 families were rendered homeless in a fire caused by faulty electrical wiring in Paniran late last year. Among the houses razed were those of Zone 4 barangay officials, including barangay chairman Abraham Sakandal.
Immediately after the fire, the victims were evacuated to the old main City High School building, a property owned by the Central Bank of the Philippines.
The bank's management has notified the City Government of its plan to fence the property in preparation for the construction of the Central Bank building, Barredo added.
Aside from Paniran fire victims, the City Government is also preoccupied with the relocation of the 1,500 families affected by the huge fire in Camino Nuevo last March 23.
Barredo said his office is checking the names of the victims to determine who are the house owners, renters, and boarders or sharers.
The City Government is also set to provide financial aid to the victims. Those whose houses were totally razed will receive P5,000, P3,000 for those whose houses were partially burned, and P2,000 for house boarders or sharers.
The proposed relocation site for the Camino Nuevo fire victims is Talon-Talon. However, the City Government has emphasized that a fire victim should pass the different criteria to be able to qualify in the relocation process.
