Buy PS or ICC-marked TV sets: DTI
THE Department of Trade and Industry, Zamboanga City Office, reminds consumers to be vigilant and purchase only BPS-certified television sets to be assured of the safety performance of the product.
DTI-ZCO Caretaker Engineer Rolando G. Acuña explains that since TV set is a common appliance found in most home, the Bureau of Product Standards has imposed the mandatory product certification of imported and locally-produced television sets to safeguard consumers from risk posed by substandard products.
The type of television sets covered in the mandatory product certification are the Colored and Black and While TV, with 355mm to 737 mm (12 inches to 29 inches) Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) sizes, a voltage between 110 and 250, and frequency between 50 to 60 hertz.
DTI-BPS, through its Product Certification Scheme, requires all manufacturers assembles and importers of TV sets to have their products tested and inspected, prior to safe or distribution to check the product's compliance with the safety requirements of the Philippine National Standard (PNS) License and the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) for locally-manufactured and imported products, respectively and are authorized to stamp of affix the PS or ICC mark in their products as a guide to the public.
The distributors of second-hand and surplus television sets are also required to have their products tested and certified. Therefore, starting this year, only those TV sets beading to Acuña.
As of December 2005, the BPS has issued the PS license to seven television set manufacturers namely KEC-Astron Philippines, Inc. (brands: Oclar, Switch,Minami and Singer), Maclin Electronics, Inc. (brand: Promac), Panasonic AVC Networks Kuala Lumpur Malaysia(brand Panasonic), Sharp Philippine Corp. (brand Charp), Sony EMCS (brand:
Song), TCI Sun, Inc. (brand: TCL) and Tecom Electronics Phils., Inc.
(brand: Tecom and Union).
Furthermore, from January to December 2005 the BPS has issued the ICC to 17 importers namely Allied Distribution Inc. (brand: Hyundai), Avoni Asia, Inc. (brand: Protech, Infineon, Coby, Prince), Cititech Inc. (brand: Toshiba), Express Solution Marketing Corp. (brand" Exsol), Goldway Digital Equipment, Inc. (brand: Toshiba), JVC Phils. Inc. (brand: JVC), Kolin Phils. Internation Inc. (brand: Kolin), LG Electronics Phils. Inc. (brand: LG), Mulson's Trading (brand: Polytron), Phillips Electronic and Lighting, Inc. (brand: Phillips),
Polytron Phils.Inc. (brand: Polytron), Richburg Corporation (brand:Fukuda), Samsung Electronics Phils. Inc. (Samsung), Sanyo Phils.Inc. (brand: Sanyo), Sony Phils. Inc. (brand: Sony), Spiegel
Trading (brand: Akira), Techpoint Enterprises(brand: Skyworth), and
Trademaster Resources Corp. (brand: Changhong).
