Armm fact-finding team sent to settle Sulu conflicts

A TEAM of investigators sent by the Office of the Governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao rules out the possibility of further violence between warring groups in Sulu once a fair and just resolution of the conflicts is given proper attention through dialogue.

Earlier, Armm Governor Datu Zaldy Ampatuan ordered an independent and separate probe on the shooting wars relative to the conflict in Kalinggal Caluang and Banguingui (Tongkil) municipalities in the Province of Sulu between armed groups.

Ampatuan formed a fact-finding committee led by Armm Regional Police Director Sr. Supt. Akmad Mamalinta (chairman); Regional-Unification Council (RUCC) head Amado R. Gonoy; Science and Technology Secretary Bugtong Ampatuan; Vice Mayor Ahmad Omar (Luuk); Assemblyman Maulana Omar (RLA), and retired Police Supt. Ibnohashim Undog (Tongkil).

The panel of investigators left on May 4 for Jolo, Sulu, to meet with Sulu Governor Benjamin Loong and other local officials to dig deeper into the case.

Mamalinta appealed to the warring groups to cease and desist from engaging in bloody confrontations to allow the probe body to get to the bottom of the conflict even as he warned them of possible action by higher authorities.

Ganoy said a dialogue is necessary to achieve a "win-win" solution to the problem.

The committee met separately last weekend with protagonists in their camps in Zamboanga, where "an unbiased picture on the circumstances of the incidents was bared."

While in Sulu, the team also met with the officials of the military's 104th Army Infantry Brigade, Marine Brigade, and the police.

Mamalinta said the fact-finding team will send its impartial report on the investigation to Ampatuan, who is expected to personally initiate amicable settlement among those who are involved.

Isnaji said the regional governor has ordered the team to expedite the resolution of the conflicts the soonest possible time.
