Water firm rules out water rationing this year
THE Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) has ruled out the imposition of water rationing this year, as the company is able to sustain the required demand in its service area particularly during the critical period of January to May.
ZCWD Assistant Manager Alejo Rojas Jr. said thought there were several areas affected by low water pressure or disruption in water supply, the situation was isolated and not as severe as compared to the last four years.
The water firm from 2002 until last year imposed water rationing starting as early as January due to reduced water level brought about by the El Niño phenomenon.
"We were affected by El Niño for four years in a row but this year we were spared," Rojas said.
Weather forecasters have pronounced the existence of La Nina, the abnormal weather condition that brings rains, since late last year until last April, nationwide.
The phenomenon explains the occasional rainfall even during the summer month.
Rojas said while there was occasional reduction in the water level during the past months but no extreme cases were experienced unlike the past four years.
"After four years of suffering, this year we did not impose water rationing because we were able to sustain the requirement in the service areas," the water district official declared.
Meanwhile, Tumaga river the main water tributary to the dam, experienced flooding Thursday, the first flood for May, causing the water level at the dam to increase to 75.5 meters, about 1.3 meters above the normal level.
Prior to the flooding last week, the water level was very low at 74.11 meters causing some areas to experience low water pressure.
The water firm expects to sustain the requirements, as the rainy season is setting in.
