10 communist rebels surrender
SOLDIERS trained to be close to civilians and their communities managed to convince a group of New People's Army members to surrender and start new lives under the folds of the law.
Lt. Col. Susthenes Valcorza, chief of the military's 4th Civil Relations Group, made this announcement following the surrender of 10 followers of the New People's Army on Sunday in Malela, Davao del Sur.
Valcorza said the rebels yielded and turned over their firearms and ammunition to the Regional Special Operation Team 3 of the Army's 66th Infantry Battalion, following series of negotiations.
He said the surrenderees claimed they are already physically and psychologically tired of supporting the NPA so they decided to surrender.
"These soldiers live in the midst of the civilian populace and are emissaries of the government's pro-poor program," he said of the soldiers.
They are also involved in helping the local government in a locality to implement socio-economic projects, he added.
He said the surrenderees are now undergoing de-briefing. (Bong Garcia)
