Zambo Peninsula road network is part of Arroyo mega-region By Bong Garcia
OPENING of road network between this city and the province of Zamboanga del Norte that would hasten the transport of goods including farm products are among the program approved by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for implementation under the mega-region plan.
The Pagadian-Dipolog road is also in the pipeline while the Zamboanga City-Pagadian Highway is almost finished. At present, land travel to Zamboanga del Norte is via Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay province.
The road network that would be opened will be from this city's west coast up to the town of Liloy in Zamboanga del Norte crossing the municipalities of Sibuco, Sirawai, Siocon and Baliguian or the so-called triple "SB" areas of the same province.
National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) Regional Director Rafael Evangelista III disclosed that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo met with Mindanao Supra Region team where the group has gone through various programs and projects that would compose the medium term public investment program of Mindanao.
Evangelista said that a number of projects, including the opening of the road network and projects of the Zamboanga Economic Zone and Freeport Authority, for the mega-region has been identified and approved by the body.
He said the President is set to issue the executive order for the implementation of the mega region plan anytime but in the meantime, the approved programs and projects are being firmed up including the conduct of studies that could push for the implementation of the projects.
The President's mega-regional planning agenda seeks for the creation of multi-regional groupings for monitoring and fine-tuning of investment and development in the regions.
It is strongly being pushed as a strategy to consolidate regional economic development into a larger supra-regional scale.
The Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) is the agency tasked to strengthen the existing mechanism for the proposed supra-regional and mega planning initiative for growth and investment.
Evangelista said that all the projects approved by the president during the first two meetings held on July 8 and 10 with the Medco are also endorsed by the Regional Development Councils in the area.
He said the president is expected to meet the Mindanao supra region team on August 10 for further discussion about the mega region planning.
