Environment secretary to oversee Green Phil Highways launching By Bong Garcia
ENVIRONMENT and Natural Resources Secretary Angelo Reyes is arriving in this city on Friday to oversee preparations of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources regional office in line with the scheduled launching this month of the "Green Philippine Highways."
The Green Philippine Highways, which will be launched on August 25, 2006, is a project of the DENR meant to promote the image of every Filipinos as planters of trees.
The massive tree planting, which will simultaneously take place along the country's three major highways, will cover a total length of 3,439 kilometers.
Two provinces in the region namely Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay are included in the west nautical highway of the so-called Green Philippine Highways.
The west nautical highway has a total length of 823.90 kilometers, spanning from Batangas City to Zamboanga Sibugay province.
The two other major highways included in the Green Philippine Highways are the 2,176.40 kilometers Pan-Philippine Highway from Laoag City to Davao City, and the 439.29 kilometers from Manila North Raod, spanning from Laoag to Manila.
Upon his arrival in the city, Reyes is set to meet the officials of the DENR regional office to get a briefing on the preparations for the simultaneous launching of the project.
Reyes is also set to meet the members of the local media for information dissemination so as to encourage the public to participate in the project launching.
Reyes said that around 500,000 seedlings will be needed for the activity to be able to plant both sides of the highways at an interval of 10 meters per seedling.
