Mayor warns v. cockfight derbies without council's okay By Bong Garcia
MAYOR Celso Lobregat has warned against the holding of cockfight derby without the concurrence of the City Council, as it is tantamount to the holding of an illegal cockfighting activity.
Lobregat issued the warning after he received information that a cockpit barker announced on Sunday that the scheduled cockfight derby in one of the local cockpits will push through on Saturday, August 5, as scheduled.
"If there is no concurrence of the Council, they cannot hold it (cockfight derby). It will be a holding of illegal cockfight," the mayor said.
In last week's regular session, the City Council, has for the second time, denied the applications submitted by three local cockpits for the holding of cockfight derbies this month of August.
The application was denied after only six members of the august body voted in favor while seven abstained from voting.
Lobregat is not keen to override or veto the decision of the august body, citing his respect for the City Council as a decision-making body.
However, the mayor said he will again send this week for the Council's concurrence the application of the three local cockpit operators who want to hold cockfight derbies during the month of August.
Lobregat said he will let the City Council "take whatever action they want to take on the matter," citing it needs the concurrence of the legislative body.
"I will respect the ordinance," he added, saying it is stipulated in the city ordinance that all applications for cockfight derbies need the concurrence of the City Council.
