Surrender or die: General to JIs, Sayyafs
By Bong Garcia

MAJOR Gen. Gabriel Habacon, chief of the Armed Forces Southern Command, said the only way for the terrorists to survive is to surrender.

This, as Habacon called on Jemaah Islamiyah and Abu Sayyaf members to surrender or they will be captured or be killed following his order to launch an intensive operation against the terrorists in Sulu effective August 1.

The offensive order was issued following reports that high-ranking terrorist leaders were converging in a certain area in the town of Indanan.

Habacon said his command has designed "an extensive offensive plot for the capture of these terrorists to prevent them from performing terror activities and permanently dispersed them in the region."

"The people of Sulu deserve a better way of life and by removing the lawless individuals from the island, prosperity can come more quickly," Habacon said.

"For too long, the problems of Sulu had lived with these lawless elements and endure bombings, kidnappings and killings. Those individuals (terrorists) will either give up, be captured or be killed through out actions," he added.

The Abu Sayyaf had been responsible for a series of kidnappings of both Filipinos and foreigners in the past years here in Mindanao and Palawan.

Habacon said that the fresh military campaign is intended to create and secure peaceful environment not just in Sulu but also in other regions as well.

However, it is expected that it will not be a quick battle "but it will be one where we will be decisive and victorious," according to Habacon.
