Vice mayor disappointed over Zambo's failure to host Palaro '07
CITY caretaker and Vice Mayor Beng Climaco expressed disappointment that Zamboanga City failed to make it in its bid to host the 2007 Palarong Pambansa, but stressed that the city continues to open its doors for other conventions and activities-local or international in scope.
"We feel it was a loss that Zamboanga City didn't make it to the Palaro, but I think it is also their loss," the city caretaker said in reaction to the Department of Education's decision to choose Koronadal City over Zamboanga to be the venue for next year's Palaro.
Reports indicate that the Palaro board composed of DepEd bureau and regional directors and chaired by Education Undersecretary Ramon Bacani gave bigger consideration to the bidder's offer of additional amenities and tokens and not much on the sports facilities.
Out of the three bidders, Zamboanga emerged last in terms of number of votes obtained with Tubod, Lanao del Norte as second placer.
Vice Mayor Climaco hoped that the department, in future biddings, would stick to the more important aspect, that is, the facilities for the holding of the sports activities and the accommodation of the athletes. "We hope that the Deped and other evaluators can look at the potentials of the local government unit".
She stressed that Zamboanga City has a lot to offer and is in fact considered as the best conference venue for Mindanao. Organizers and participants of previous sports activities held here can attest to the efficiency and reliability of the sports facilities in Zamboanga.
Nonetheless, she said, the city continues to open its doors for other conventions, conferences or sports activities in the future. The result of the Palaro bidding would not dampen the city's desire to welcome all other organizations, groups-be it locally or internationally to converge here for their conference or conventions.
"We invite people from other places to come to Zamboanga City and see the difference. You will like it here and you will return," Vice Mayor Climaco added. (SE)
