Thursday, October 26, 2006 Child Friendly LGU Awards to highlight Children's Month celebration
THE holding of the Regional Children's Congress and the Regional Awarding of the Most Child Friendly City and Municipality will highlight this year's celebration of the National Children's month in the Zamboanga Peninsula region.
Pre-schoolers, day care workers, local social workers, child advocates from various national government and non-governmental organizations to include the schools will converge on October 30, 2006 in Zamboanga City for the holding of the Regional Children's Congress.
Talented children from the different provinces and cities in the region will compete in Singing, Folk Dance and Draw & Tell competition categories during the congress. The contestants are the winners in the city and provincial level search conducted in their respective areas.
This regional congress will not only serve to advocate for the convergence of services for children, but will also provide the opportunity for the children to showcase their talents and express their views and perceptions on issues affecting themselves, their families and the community as a whole, even at this early stage in their life.
On the other hand, the awarding of the Most Child Friendly City and Municipality will be held simultaneously with the Children's Congress. This search aims to give due recognition to the outstanding LGUs in their efforts to sensitize a child friendly environment through child friendly local governance. The regional awardees will vie for the national level award, which is a Presidential Award, being administered every two years by the National Council for the Welfare of Children (NCWC) under the Office of the President.
The National Children's Month is being observed every October, with this year's theme: "Bright Child: Yaman ng Pamilya, Yaman ng Bansa!" which aims to give recognition to the role of a nurturing family and the nation in producing a Bright Child.
As a progressive advocacy at the community level, the theme specifically hopes to encourage members of the community to actively respond to children's rights through convergence of programs and services for the child. (Fe dela Cruz)
