Taiwan donates motorcycles to Zambo government By Bong Garcia
Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Representative Hsin-Hsing Wu is arriving in Zamboanga City next week to turn over motorcycles to be used by local authorities in peacekeeping efforts.
Mayor Celso Lobregat said on Monday that Wu will hand over 38 units of Taiwan-made motorcycles to the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, who in turn will donate it to the local government.
"It was the chamber who worked it out for the donation of the motorcycles," Lobregat said.
The mayor said 20 of the motorcycles will be given to the local police, 10 to TFZ, two to the Red Cross and the rest to the other local government offices that need additional transportation.
The motorcycles donated by Taiwan will form part of the 60 motorcycle units that will be utilized by the local police and Task Force Zamboanga (TFZ) to patrol the city on a 24-hour basis. The move is part of security measures that will be implemented following the spate of killings in this city.
Since last month, 12 people including policemen and soldiers were killed by gunmen riding on motorcycle in the different parts of the city.
At least 120 personnel will be deployed for patrol since each motorcycle will be manned by two people, a driver and passenger riding tandem in a buddy-buddy system.
