Friday, February 23, 2007 City stages inter-school cheer dance tilt
A TOTAL of six teams representing the tertiary and secondary levels will vie for the title in the Inter-School Cheer Dance contest set to be held Friday, at 1 p.m., in the city coliseum in Tetuan.
The cheer dance tilt will be held back to back with the "Zamboanga City Dance Academy: The showdown" (hip hop competition), which will also have 6 contestants coming from the tertiary and secondary levels.
Now on its fifth year, the Cheer Dance competition is initiated by the City Government through the City Tourism Division under the Office of the Mayor and forms part of the highlights of the 70th Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga.
The participants come from the Western Mindanao State University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Universidad de Zamboanga, Pilar College, Maria Clara Lobregat National High School and the Zamboanga City High School-Main.
Three major winners will be chosen in the competition. First prize is P20,000; second prize is P15,000 and 3rd prize is P10,000.
Criteria for judging include synchronization- 40 percent, artistry, choreography, style- 40 percent, costume- 10 percent and acrobatic skills- 10 percent.
A cheer dance team composes of a minimum of 25 members and a maximum of 35 members, exclusive of the crew or props men whose number of members shall be between 5-10.
The hip-hop competition, meanwhile, will have three major winners who will receive cash prizes. First prize is P3,000; second prize is P2,000 and third prize is P1,000.
The showdown's criteria are: choreography- 35 percent, synchronicity/timing- 35 percent, costume-10 percent and overall impact-20 percent.
The City Tourism Office led by Sarita Hernandez has also set two other contests in line with the Dia de Zamboanga celebration: the Competicion del Selyo de Zamboanga and the Asia's Latin City Logo competition.
The Dia de Zamboanga anniversary will be on February 26, Monday but activities for the observance reeled off February 9 with the arrival of MS Albatross, a foreign cruise ship. (SE)
