Thursday, March 22, 2007 Mushroom production training held
THE market for mushrooms continues to grow due to interest in their culinary, nutritional and health benefits.
One serving has only about 20 calories and it is rich is niacin, potassium, selenium, and copper minerals. With this, more and more farmers are showing interests in cultivating mushrooms.
A series of training sessions on Mushroom Production were held recently at Dalangen Farm, Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay province.
The Department of Science and Technology (Dost) 9 co-organized the event by bringing in the resource speakers from its Industrial Technology Development Institute in Manila. They are Dr. Claro Santiago and Emilio Montiague.
Fifteen beneficiaries of the training were farmers working in Dalangen Farm owned by Cookie Jajurie. The workshop was aimed at developing a mushroom production center to increase the farmers' income and productivity and make use of this abundant agricultural resource.
To make the training very useful and appropriate, the workshop focused on culture preparation, spawning, and fruiting bags production. A mushroom house, where the laboratory, production and working areas are located, has been constructed in the farm area. (Press release)
