Friday, April 14, 2007 1st batch of summer workers starts April 16
Some 1,500 college students will compose the first batch of beneficiaries of the Summer Program for the Employment of Students (SPES), a joint project of the City Government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo, whose office supervises the implementation of the program, said the students will receive a salary of P172.72 per day starting April 16.
Sixty percent of the students' salary will come from the City Government while 40 percent will come from the labor department.
Of the total 1,525 students, 295, dubbed as SPES babies, will work for 30 days or one month specifically April 16-March 29 while the rest will work for 20 days specifically April 16- May 15.
Mayor Celso Lobregat will spearhead the orientation of the first batch of SPES beneficiaries on April 16 at the City Coliseum in Tetuan.
The second batch of students composed of about 2,000 will commence work sometime in May.
Francisco said the students will be assigned in the barangays and the 20 offices of the City Government and will undertake activities based on the work program submitted by the agencies or barangay councils concerned.
The orientation program will also be attended by representatives from the labor department and the Human Resource Management Office.
Mayor Lobregat has allocated P7 million for the SPES program this year. The amount is higher than the previous year's allocation in a bid to expand the number of beneficiaries this year.
Last year, 2,820 students availed of the SPES program. (SE)
