Deadline for media awards nomination on April 19

SUBMISSION of nominations for the Media Awards, a search held in commemoration of the Dia de Ma'am Caling on April 26, has been extended until noon of April 19.

Nominations should be submitted to the City Tourism Office located at the Sunken Garden fronting City Hall.

The Media Awards is initiated by the City Government through the City Tourism Division and is purposely to honor members of the media who have contributed to the development of the city as well as the betterment of the profession.

The Media Awards categories include columnist/media commentator, development news writer, feature writer, photographer, news and public affairs program award and the Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat Media Award.

The evaluation and selection of the awardees will be done by a group of evaluators that is composed of representatives from different sectors of the city.

The nomination is open for any bonafide member of the local print, television, and radio outfits in Zamboanga City.

The selection/ evaluation process will involve different criteria for the different categories. For the columnist/media commentator, the articles or issues tackled should have public service value (40 percent), timeliness/relevance of subject matter (30 percent), presentation style (20 percent) and credibility (10 percent).

The criteria for the development news writer include content (40 percent), presentation (20 percent), attribution (10 percent) and motivational impact (30 percent). The content of the article refers to how comprehensive or well researched the item or items are, if it provides constructive value, presents analysis/interpretation, and is inspiring and motivating. Presentation refers to the pictures presented, graphs/tables and anything that facilitates appreciation of the content.

The news and pubic affairs program to be nominated must comply with the requirement on timeliness/relevance/program content (25 percent), format and management of the program (25 percent), including balance approach, manners, and quality of guests; impact of the program (25 percent) and sustainability of the program (25 percent), including length and sponsors.

Criteria for the feature writer award include: creative writing style, 50 percent and human interest value, 50 percent while the criteria for the photographer award are: visual impact of content, 50 percent and clarity of the message, 50 percent.

The Mayor Maria Clara L. Lobregat Media Award, on the other hand, will be given to a media practitioner who is immensely supportive of the city's agenda for growth and advancement, manifesting this in his profession (professional integrity/ credibility); shows genuine love for the city, its people and traditions, promoting unity in the ranks of not only media but the community as well (his/her work reflects culture and good attributions of Zamboanga); serves as a model of integrity, esteem, professionalism, and leadership in the media profession (must have made an extraordinary remarkable contribution to society) and earns the respect of all sectors of society with his skill, impartiality, integrity and capability.

The Media Awards is in line with the commemoration of Dia de Ma'am Caling on April 26 and is based on an ordinance enacted on April 11, 2006. (SE)
