Thursday, October 04, 2007 Lawmakers support Climaco’s Pink October Initiative
ZAMBOANGA City’s 1st District Representative Beng Climaco is humbled at the overwhelming support she got from her colleagues in the 14th Congress on the Pink October advocacy she launched in the House of Representatives.
Pink October, a Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention Campaign, was initiated for the first time in Congress by Climaco with the strong support of the Lady Legislators spearheaded by its President, Congressman Cynthia Villar, the Philippine Foundation for Breast Care Inc. led by Dr. Cristina Santos, Breast Care Center of East Avenue Medical Center and the Gabriela Women’s Party.
Congresswomen Climaco, Villar, Faysah Dumarpa of Lanao del Sur, and Herminia Roman of Bataan led in a gift giving activity at the East Avenue Medical Center. Senate President Manny Villar donated the gift packs for the patients.
After the gift giving, the group then conducted a Forum on Breast Cancer and a Free Breast Examination for employees of the House of Representatives and women of Barangay Batasan, the host community of Congress.
As a show of support to Climaco’s initiative, Congresswomen Villar of Las Piñas, Herminia Romano of Bataan, Judy Syjuco of Iloilo, Rissa Hontiveros-Baraquel of Akbayan, Carmen Cari of Leyte, Liza Maza of Gabriela Women’s Party, and Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro City were present in the forum.
Majority of the Members of Congress then signed a Manifesto of Support to replicate the said advocacy in their respective districts after Climaco’s Privilege Speech during the Plenary Session. (Press release)
