Friday, March 14, 2008 BIR to probe seaweed firm on tax remittances
AN OFFICIAL of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) said they are investigating a seaweed company that is operating a branch in this city to determine if the firm is paying the right amount of taxes to the government.
Revenue District Office-93 (RDO-93) Chief Roberto Bucoy said they are closely working with the BIR central office in Quezon City where the seaweed firm is paying taxes as the company's main office is located in that city.
However, the BIR was prompted to conduct the investigation since some of the BIR personnel in Quezon City have heard that the branch office of the seaweed company is paying its taxes here since it is operating in this city, Bucoy said.
The local BIR official said he has already forwarded all the documents they have in this city pertaining to the operations of the seaweed company branch office for consolidation of the documents in the revenue central office.
He said the BIR could determine if the company pays the right amount of taxes after all of the documents will be consolidated and reviewed.
He said corresponding penalties will be slapped to the company once discovered that it does not pay the correct amount of taxes to the government.
He did not reveal the seaweed company's name pending the results of the investigation. The firm in engaged in the production of carageenan. (Bong Garcia)
