ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The National Capital Region (NCR) continues to harvest victories in the same events in the 3rd day of the 2008 National Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) games held at the Joaquin F. Enriquez memorial sports complex here.
The powerhouse athletic and swimming squads, which led the medal-haul of the big city in days one and two, collected 25 gold medals anew Friday, April 11, from the oval and pool to pull NCR in leadership away from the other regions in the 3rd day of the yearly sports meet of the country's private schools.
The track and field campaigners of NCR endured the heat of the sun to wrest 17 golds courtesy of Luville Dato-on, Cristy-Ann Añonuevo, Kiezel Pedriña and Zara Dela Virgo (W 4X100, 200, 300, 400m Relay), Florida Gonzales (W 10,000m Walk),
Bernardita Mag-aso, Jelyn Rojas (W Javelin Throw) Zara Dela Virgo (W 100m Hurdles), Bernardita Mag-aso (W 800m Run), Oliver Garcia (M 5,000m Run), Nelber Ducusin (M 3,000m Staple Chase and M 800m Run), Romulo Mostoles, Romnick Herida, Christian Mendoza, and Junrey Bano (M 4X100, 200, 300, 400m Relay).
Ilocos, Western Visayas, and Western Mindanao shared one gold apiece. Rochielle Corpuz picked up the gold for Ilocos region in the women's triple jump, while Melchor Jonas doled out a gold for Southern Mindanao after ruling the men's triple jump.
Emmanuel Ibrahim contributed one gold to Western Mindanao following his victory in the men's 110m hurdles. The other athletic events were still in progress as of this writing Friday.
Although no records were broken Thursday, NCR maintained its dominance in swimming, splashing 13 golds anew.
Marvie Borja, Edson King Dinglasan, Josephine Pilapil and Lianne Marice Marquez, who shattered some Prisaa marks, outclassed the other bets in their respective assignments.
Borja ruled the women's 400m Individual Medley in 5:47.66, while Pilapil and Marquez snatched the golds in women's 200m breaststroke and in 50m backstroke in
2:59.63 and 32.63, respectively, while Dinglasan topped the men's 200m breaststroke in 2:38.74. Ferdinand Frigillana secured the gold in men's 400m IM.
Dinglasan combined with Macgyver Reyes, Romulo Cabal, and Theody Gavino to capture the 4 golds in men's 400m 4X100 Relay, while the three lady record breakers along with Apryl Pearl Herrera nailed the four golds in the women's 200m 4X50 freestyle relay.
Western Visayas and Southern Mindanao seized five golds each in the second day of the swimming competition, while Southern Tagalog-A sealed one through the effort of Frances Miclat, who won the women's 200m freestyle.
Chrizel Lagunday snubbed the NCR in the women's 200m freestyle to hand over the 1st gold of Western Visayas in the swimming contest. She was followed by her teammates Hanna Bolivar, Alexandra Ganzon, Jann Leona Villanueva and Mengic Makilan who coalesced to reign supreme in the women's 400m 4X100 medley relay.
Haroon Cali took the charge for Southern Mindanao as he outdid other pool campaigners in the men's 50m backstroke. He went on to merge with Juna Francis Bilao, Rey Cuberos, and Junie Barani to pick the four golds in the men's 200m 4x50m freestyle relay. (With a report from Prisaa Media Center)
