Yehezkel Goldenberg, a foreigner, who allegedly duped 17 Zamboangueño jobseekers and run away with more than P1 million in placement fees, was locked behind bars in Zambonga City.
Goldenberg, who turn out to be a Romanian not American as earlier reported, was brought to Zamboanga City on Tuesday from Manila by the police to face charges of illegal recruitment filed against him by the victims.
Inspector Arthur Alejandro, investigation chief of the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO), disclosed that policemen in Manila arrested Goldenberg four days ago following a physical injury complaint against him.
However, Alejandro said the police authorities in Manila discovered that Goldenberg is facing a string of cases ranging from estafa, swindling and other criminal cases in the courts of Manila, Pasig and Makati, as well as in this city.
He said Goldenberg would be detained at the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center while awaiting trial for illegal recruitment charges at a local court.
The suspect have recruited the 17 Zamboangueño jobseekers last February and allegedly collected P80,000 from each for placement fees.
The victims told the police that Goldenberg hired them to work as factory workers in Nevada, USA and promised attractive salary. (BPG)
