Tuesday, June 24, 2008 Frank-spawned flashflood displaced 1,394 families
THE local government through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) continues the relief operations to help alleviate the plight of affected families in the flashfloods spawned typhoon Frank (international codename: Fengshen) last Saturday.
CSWDO records showed that a total of 1,394 families with 5,917 dependents from eight barangays in Zamboanga City were displaced by the flashfloods brought by the southwest monsoon rains.
About 21 houses were also destroyed while eight homes were damaged based on the listing from the City Hall Action Center.
CSWDO chief Francisco Barredo said the affected families were temporarily housed at school buildings and chapel while food packs consisting of rice, noodles, sardines, water and other relief items were being distributed.
The local government through the recommendation of the City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC) has declared the affected barangays in a state of calamity due to the extent of damage wrought on the residences as well as on agricultural products.
The Office of the City Agriculture headed by Diosdado Palacat has yet to determine the extent of damaged to agricultural crops. (Bong Garcia)
