Thursday, August 14, 2008 Grenade lobbed at police headquarters By Bong Garcia
ONE of two men riding tandem on a motorcycle lobbed a hand grenade Tuesday night into the compound of the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) located in Zamboanga City's commercial district.
No one was killed or injured except for a police car that was damaged by shrapnel, a police official said Wednesday.
ZCPO director Lurimer Detan said the attack, which he described as not work-related incident, took place around 10:15 p.m.
"Actually, the motive is personal grudge. Nakita nila (suspects) yong tao sa compound at saka hinagis yung granada," Detran said.
He did not, however, say as to whether a personnel or an officer was the target of the grenade attack.
He said they are readying a criminal complaint before the City Prosecutor's Office, citing they have two witnesses who managed to identify the suspects.
He said they are just collating the witnesses' testimonies to be able to file the criminal complaint against the suspects.
The grenade attack Tuesday evening at ZCPO headquarters was the first incident that took place in Zamboanga City.
Last June 20, four policemen were wounded in a similar attack in the police station of Kabasalan town in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay.
The police tagged a faction of renegade Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) led by the late Akiddin Abdul Salam, alias Commander Kiddie, as the perpetrators.
Commander Kiddie was killed in the afternoon of June 14 this year in a shootout with government authorities in the village of Salipyasin, Kabasalan town.
