Ateneo MassCom students to launch book

THE Creative Writing and Playwriting classes of the Department of Mass Communication will have a book launching activity at 6 p.m. Tuesday dubbed as "Binurong Lapis" at The Gallery of the Peninsula and The Archipelago façade.

Paul Marquez, project manager, said they came up with the book launching as their way of "fostering appreciation of the arts in Zamboanga and to give avenue for young writers to harness their writing skills."

The book includes 10 short stories and 10 stage plays originally written by the students.

Most of the stories are localized, making it more interesting to read. Each story also shares a different genre according to the author's expertise of writing, he said.

The "Binurong Lapis" book launch will be reckoned as the first student book launching in the history of Ateneo Masscom and even in Zamboanga.

Amilbahar Mawallil, one of the writers, acknowledges that "more than the pride of being part of this book and making history, I am very happy to be given the chance to write and express myself."

The book launch is a culminating activity of the Creative Writing and Playwriting classes. It will also be an event for the students to present themselves and their works to the public, as representatives of the youth today, make a difference, and have voice in society through short story and stage play writing.

Also part of the program is "poetry reading," which will include contemporary poems written by local poets and the reading of one stage play that is also included in the book.

Organizers are inviting the public to witness the book launching and help liven up the arts industry in the city. (Press release)
