Saturday, December 20, 2008 Tawi-Tawi fire victims receive relief assistance
THE Provincial Government of Tawi-Tawi has launched relief operations to give assistance to the close to 2,000 people displaced by the fire that hit a coastal village in Bongao.
Tawi-Tawi Vice Governor Ruby Sahali said relief goods like foodstuffs, clothing materials and other basic needs of the fire victims were distributed by the Provincial Government.
Sahali said that of the 300 families affected, only 30 families are staying at the evacuation center while the rest sought shelter with their relatives.
She said some 250 houses were razed to the ground affecting 1,800 individuals.
The fire broke out around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in sitio Kasanyangan in the village of Tubig Tana, Bongao town killing a newborn baby and an elderly woman.
The fire started in one of the houses along the road side of Tubig Tana and rapidly spread to the interior area destroying 250 house mostly houses on stilts. (Bong Garcia)
