A VIDEO of actor Richard Gomez speaking to the people of Ormoc City in straight Bisaya went viral on social media days before and after the May 9 polls.
Many people were wondering whether he truly is Bisaya or just learned the language from his wife, Lucy Marie Torres, who is from Ormoc City.
Gomez, in an interview with SuperBalita Cebu, said he learned Bisaya not just from his wife but from his friends and house helpers.
"Akong mga amigo mga Bisaya. Among mga katabang sa balay, tanan puros mga Bisaya. Isa lang dili Bisaya, ang akong personal driver (Some of my friends are Bisaya. Our house helpers are all Bisaya, except my personal driver)," he said.
He also said that his daughter, Juliana, also knows how to speak Bisaya.
"And if I'm here (Ormoc City), I practice my Bisaya," he added.
Here's the full video of SuperBalita Cebu's interview with Gomez.
Gomez was born in Manila. He was elected as mayor of Ormoc City last May 9 polls, his first successful attempt in politics. He first ran for senator in 2007, and then as congressman in 2010 but was disqualified. He also ran for Ormoc City mayor in 2013 but lost to Edward Codilla.
His wife, Torres, was reelected as Leyte's fourth district representative.
Gomez said the job as mayor of Ormoc requires him to be in the city every day, "so I will be here every day." (LMY/Sunnex)
