Vino de Coco pushed as Leyte’s official wine-A A +A

OFFICERS and owners of the locally-made Vino de Coco clarified that the purpose in pushing for the recognition of their product as the official wine of Leyte province is to provide a benchmark for quality wine that can compete in the global market.
Timothy Paraliza, senior vice president of DJ Crater Inc., the local producer of Vino de Coco based in Marasbaras, Tacloban City, said that before they could introduce the coco wine (tuba) in the international market and become globally competitive, it has first to be recognized amongst the people in the province and the region.
A proposal asking for the locally produced Vino de Coco as the official wine of Leyte was recently sent before members of the Provincial Board of Leyte. However, the proposal was met with several opposition among which includes the apprehension that this may affect business and production of other local tuba or coco wine makers in the province.
“We have to see it in another angle and one that is looking forward into the future of tuba. What we are trying to do is to enlarge the market of tuba that would benefit local coco wine producers in the province and the region,” Paraliza said.
He said they are refuting some doubts raised because what they are actually trying to do is open up a new market. Otherwise, tuba will remain stagnant.
He added that their purpose is to exploit all other options for the tuba industry which has not been explored by the local industry before.
Once recognized by and among the local folks, Paraliza said, it would put leverage in marketing the product internationally and even among foreign tourists who visit the country.
“With an enlarged market, this would also benefit coco farmers and coco wine producers and not just us,” Paraliza disclosed.
