Petilla attends World Cities Summit

TACLOBAN CITY – Mayor Remedios Petilla was one of the thousands of mayors all over the world who attended the World Cities Summit held recently in Singapore.
The World Cities Summit, a premier global event for world leaders and key industry players, is aimed to address challenges and develop integrated solutions for sustainable cities.
Organizers report the summit ended on a high note with new landmark deals signed, record participation and a call for cities to focus more on integrated solutions.
Mayor Petilla said about 3,000 other world leaders and experts who attended the event, acknowledged that cities are the new centers for growth and innovation, and complex urbanization challenges can be turned into opportunities to transform cities and lives.
The summit is established in order to harness the forces of urbanization, to develop good governance and to build strong partnerships between governments, companies, citizens across cities.
In the Mayors Forum, one of the key highlight of the World Cities Summit, the chief executives discussed challenges and innovative solutions to build liveable cities.
As cities, top priority should heavily consider water and waste management solutions in the context of liveability and sustainability.
Petilla said the summit was a timely exposure for their town as it continuously emerges itself as an alternative business district in Leyte, with businesses and commercial establishments making their way through, in the town’s economic activity.
The urban leaders agreed that stronger integration across urban planning, development, governance and technology solutions is urgently needed to address urbanization challenges in a more holistic, efficient way, it was learned.
The conduct of the World Cities Summit is also seen to strengthen its role as an integrated platform addressing dynamic governance, master planning and leading urban solutions in the future.
The next World Cities Summit Mayors Forum will be in 2013 to be held in Bilbao, Spain. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
