TACLOBAN CITY- About a thousand of Catholic faithful gave a rousing welcome to the visiting holy image of the newly-canonized saint, Pedro Calungsod, on Thursday.
The holy image of the country’s second saint arrived in Tacloban Wednesday afternoon after his visit to the dioceses of Catarman in Northern Samar; Calbayog and Catbalogan in Samar.
The three-foot holy image of Saint Calungsod that visited the region was the very same image brought to Rome when the 17-year-old catechist was canonized by Pope Benedict VXI last month.
The image of the saint was given a rousing welcome when it entered the Santo Nino Church where a Holy Mass was held presided by Archbishop John Du, archbishop of the Metropolitan of Palo, and joined by about 20 priests from the archdiocese.
In his homily, the archbishop said that the region was lucky to be visited by Saint Pedro Calungsod whom he said could herald blessings to the people of the place.
He also said that Calungsod’s visit, no matter how short-live it may be, would result to renewal of faith among the faithful, especially the young.
The archbishop lamented that unlike Saint Pedro Calungsod, majority of today’s youth no longer give respect to the priests and to the Church.
“It is so rare nowadays that you can see a Pedro Calungsod...who offered his own life for the Church,” he said.
He also said that some of today’s youth and even faithful openly attack the Church, an apparent reference to the various stand of the country’s Catholic Church on some controversial issues like the polarizing reproductive health bill.
On Friday, the holy image of Saint Pedro Calungsod is set to visit the parish of Sante Fe in Abuyog, Leyte which honor him as its patron saint. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
