Palo mayor plans to build modern market building-A A +A

THE Municipal Government of Palo is planning to have a new and modern market building under the public-private–partnership (PPP) scheme to put in place necessary infrastructures to accommodate the town’s growing economy, said Mayor Remedios Petilla.
Petilla said it is about time for the old market to get a new facelift, as more businesses are coming into the town and economic opportunities in the area are continuously growing.
“We need expansion and rehabilitation of our facilities, especially our market building. We do not want to be loaning from banks for our projects, thus we opt for the PPP scheme,” she said.
The income of the Municipal Government is now pegged at P55 million.
But Petilla said the realization of such a project could only be through a partnership with the private sector, as the local government unit funds alone cannot support such a big project.
She said the planned market building would be three-story high that would house the wet and dry market, as well as various other businesses such as salons, boutiques, food establishments and other commercial enterprises.
“But my dream is for the market to have a movie house where people can relax and watch movies. We do not have a big cinema here and we still have to go to the city to watch a movie. For now, a movie house will do,” Petilla said.
Since the old market site sits on a smaller area, the market project cannot afford to be built on a sprawling design, thus the option is to build it in floors.
PPP has been pushed by President Benigno Aquino III’s administration as the National Government recognizes the essential role of the private sector as the main engine for national growth and development.
In accordance with this, pertinent incentives will be provided to stimulate private resources for the purpose of financing the construction, operation and maintenance of infrastructure and development projects normally undertaken by the government. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
