THE Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) is implementing development projects for Maasin City airport to accommodate commercial flights before 2016.
Dante Lulu, DOTC area manager for Western and Eastern Visayas, said two major projects are now ongoing for Maasin airport with a combined cost of P70.5 million.
“We are developing Maasin airport not just for general aviation but for passenger aircraft. This used to be an airstrip and now, we are slowly improving the facility. The National Government will not pour out funds if this is not viable,” Lulu said.
The Maasin airport in Barangay Panan-awan has 1,200 meters long runway. The airport does not service commercial flights although the Southeast Asian Airlines expressed its interest to launch Manila-Maasin or Cebu-Maasin route.
In January this year, the DOTC also awarded a P12.92-million runway extension project to Montano Construction and Development Corporation in Dipolog City.
A P57.58-million construction of passenger terminal building, drainage system, site development and concreting apron and ramp was also awarded to the same firm three months ago. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
