Tacloban marks Elderly Filipino Week-A A +A
Wednesday, October 2, 2013
THE City Government of Tacloban will be celebrating the Elderly Filipino Week this October to recognize the need for the protection and welfare of the city’s senior citizens.
Together with the Office for Senior Citizen’s Affairs (Osca) and the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), Tacloban will celebrate the Elderly Filipino Week from October 1 to 7 as mandated by the National Government.
This year’s celebration comes with the theme “Nakatatanda: Pagtulungang Isulong Benipisyo’t Karapatan Tungo sa Maginhawa at Masayang Pamayanan.”
On Tuesday, a cultural show was showcased at the Balyuan Amphitheater.
Residents of Barangay Suhi and Barangay 86, San Jose can also avail of the medical services on October 4.
A dialogue of the implementation of Republic Act (RA) 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 with the transport operators, business establishments, and government offices was also conducted Thursday at the Osca function room.
“This celebration actually highlights the medical missions since our senior citizens are in critical need of medical assistance. However, the dialogue with the transport operators and business establishments is also crucial to ensure that senior citizens’ benefits and privileges, as provided by law, are given to them,” said Remy Buna, spokesperson for the welfare of senior citizens, CSWDO.
Buna said the office targets to conduct the dialogue to the business establishments and transport operators who do put into practice the mandates of RA 9994 so they will be encouraged to participate in strengthening the programs for the senior citizens.
The celebration is open to the senior citizens all over the city and they are all invited to take part in the annual celebration. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
