ORMOC CITY -- The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) was placed on alert status once again starting Thursday, April 3, following the jailbreak in Calbayog City, Samar.

Jail Warden Chief Inspector Ramil Vestra said the alert was raised just three days after the BJMP lifted the same status set earlier due to confirmed threat from the New People's Army (NPA), which celebrated its anniversary last March 29.

It was raised once again shortly after the jail received a memorandum from its Eastern Visayas regional office, said Vestra. The new directive came out after 16 inmates bolted the Calbayog City jail in Samar Wednesday morning.

Thus, all Ormoc BJMP personnel are obliged to report to duty 24 hours a day and seven days a week until the order is lifted - with no definite date yet.

The 150-capacity Ormoc City jail currently houses 245 inmates, including Jaime Soledad, a suspected member of a left-leaning group arrested few years ago.

Despite threats, Vestra is confident that jailbreak will not happen considering that they have formed an intelligence network among detainees. (PNA)
