Bong O. Wenceslao

Candid Thoughts
Wenceslao’s road to the journalism profession was circuitous. While still with Southwestern University’s campus publication The Quill, he was offered a reporter’s slot in the Visayan Herald (now defunct). He worked part-time in dyLA.

But a bigger concern drew away Bong, as colleagues call him: the fight against the Marcos dictatorship.

Some seven years later, he was back, more serious about resuming his journalism career at dyLA. But as writing was his real passion, he left broadcasting to be a reporter at The Freeman.

Malilong passed in 1968 the qualifying examinations for staff members of The Visayanian, the college publication of the University of the Visayas, little did he know that he would be embarking on an equally, if not more, challenging career.

He first worked in 1969 as cub reporter for the Cebu News and Information Service, patterned after the then Philippine News Service, now the Philippine News Agency.

He joined The Freeman when Pachico Seares was editor and Juanito Jabat, associate editor.

Meanwhile
Perhaps Yap’s frequent trips to a library near his college signaled the drastic turn his life would take. While studying nursing, he caught a severe case of the writing bug. Editing the college paper fueled further his journalistic interests, and it wasn’t long until he traded his nursing license for media work.

He was a writer for Sun.Star Horizons, Sun.Star Cebu Weekend Magazine and Sun.Star Cebu Travel section in his neophyte years in the media.
