Joanna Cuenco highlights what makes a sensational makeup maven click

Noe has always been fascinated by the arts and used to dance, sing, draw and play musical instruments. But makeup was the art form she decided to pursue, based on her life-long passion and natural talent for it. “Since I was a little girl, I always loved makeup,” Noe shares. “I would play with my mom’s makeup kit, then practice on my lola while she was sleeping!” When Noe was 18, her sister Rain (first Queen pageant winner) gave Noe makeup for Christmas. Noe started taking clients when she was in college and eventually started charging a fee.

Watching beauty tutorials by Filipinas on YouTube, Noe realized that viewers like herselfcan learn how to create looks using local products. She was also inspired by foreign YouTube gurus, particularly the Pixi Woo sisters. “Their approach to making tutorials is the same as mine. It focuses on technique and is very instructional, unlike others who focus more on the style of the video.”

She started her channel, youtube.com/colorismyweapon three years ago. Noe still films her tutorials in her bedroom, but has since taken a more professional approach towards it. She has invested in her filming setup with a better camera and video editor, and now uses artificial light so that it’s consistent, without the shadows of clouds from natural light. Her channel has since attracted 25,000 subscribers and over 1 million views.

Watching Noe work her makeup magic on our model Fiona, it’s obvious that she knows her craft through and through. She talks about product consistency, brush shape and density, and working with facial features much like an artist would talk about medium and canvas. “I don’t do template makeup because not everyone has the same face shape.

The same makeup look won’t work for everyone.” She continues to learn techniques by watching YouTube and, of course, practicing. “Experience is always the best teacher. I also get invited now to beauty events and seminars, so I keep learning.”

Being a beauty guru might seem easy, but for Noe, it’s almost like a full time job.

When she isn’t handling clients or editing tutorials, she’s meeting deadlines for the companies she works with and answering questions from her many subscribers on YouTube and followers on Instagram and Twitter. “But all the hard work pays off when people say, ‘I learned so much from you.’ That’s the icing on the cake for me.”

Soon, Noe will be conducting makeup workshops at Dolled Up Makeup Studio. One workshop will be for a customized curriculum upon participants’ request. A second, more intensive workshop is about theory and application, for people who have no background with makeup or who want to learn more about technique. She may also have a third workshop entirely dedicated to brows.

Noe glammed herself up for our shoot and with her hair and makeup, she could easily pass for a TV starlet. But despite her pretty glamorous line of work, you won’t find Noe at a trendy bar every weekend. “I like staying at home. When I do go out, I like hanging out at chill places where I don’t have to dress up and put on a face.”

Noe says of her work, “I want to be able to help women look and feel their best.” Her beauty philosophy is more than just makeup and brushes: “Makeup can only do so much.

It’s inner beauty that exudes and makes a person really beautiful.”
