Wasabi!

HAPPY St. Patrick’s Day to all Lex In The City followers! Since today is St. Patrick’s Day, let’s talk green! Aside from it being one of my favourite colours, it is also the colour of most of my favourite things and food, and one of them is wasabi!

My father introduced me to wasabi when I was a child. I remember him teaching me the “techniques” on how to eat it with my sashimi. Since then, I have fallen in love with wasabi. Through the years I have encountered quite a few wasabi-flavoured delicacies like green peas coated with wasabi, peanuts with wasabi, wasabi-flavoured this and that. But never wasabi flavoured ice cream!

Feria at the Radisson Blu Hotel is famous for their home-made ice cream and during their Japanese food festival I, along with friends from the media, got to try unique, as well as familiar Japanese dishes prepared by no-less than Radisson Hotel Narita’s F&B Director & Executive Chef, Katsuya Ono.

The highlight of my dinner was dessert. Feria prepared an interesting and quite exciting wasabi-flavoured ice-cream. I couldn’t wait to try it. I sprinkled crushed almonds on two generous scoops of the ice cream as I always enjoy a little crunch in my sweets. It was a combination of slight sweetness, a little cream, and a mild, spicy “kick” that I have always loved about wasabi. Two-thumbs up!

Only last week, I was broken-hearted to learn that real Japanese wasabi is difficult to cultivate making it expensive and rare. So, I looked it up online and found out that the wasabi most of us buy from the grocery or eat in restaurants don’t have actual wasabi root in it. Most of them are actually a combination of horseradish, mustard, and green food colouring. Apparently, real Japanese wasabi loses its flavour after 15 minutes from the time it is grated. That is why most of the time only the higher-end Japanese restaurants serve real Japanese wasabi. Now, I wonder when I will get to try the real Japanese wasabi. I hope that time will soon come. Meanwhile, the wasabi-flavoured ice cream did the trick for me. And that makes me happy.
