Yap: Making Waves

Lex in the city

LAST weekend was indeed a weekend to remember! Lately, I haven’t really been in a party mood but I was glad I took Rica Rellon’s invitation to Cowrie Cove at the Shangri-la’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa.

Much to my pleasant surprise, Cowrie Cove has been renovated to a more spacious layout and a fresher look. It’s been ages since I have last been there and I was just so ecstatic to be there. Immediately I headed to the bar (the best spot in the area, I must say) and got myself a yummy and refreshing lassi-like drink of mango and yoghurt.

But as soon as Dennis, Cowrie Cove’s premiere bartender, started pouring cocktails on margarita glasses, I decided to drop the “wholesome” drinks to commence my weekend with the most awesome cocktail I have ever tried- The Flirt. It was a heavenly concoction of raspberry puree, raspberry-flavoured vodka, garnished with white petals.

Yes, I was curious to munch on those petals but I couldn’t quite dare.

There was no need to try the petals anyway. Delish grub was coming out of the kitchen non-stop and the Cowrie crew was stellar in service as usual. Earl was my ultimate fave for the evening. He never fails to sport his most genuine smile while constantly serving us with Vietnamese Spring Rolls and Crispy Fish Tacos amongst many other dishes at the Cove that night.

The evening’s highlight was a Bar Chef competition which I was so excited to join.

However, Rica asked me if I could be one of the judges so I accepted. I always pride myself in making killer cocktails so when I heard that the prize was an overnight stay at one of their newly renovated suites, I knew I had made the wrong decision for accepting to judge! Kidding aside, judging the Bar Chef challenge was so much fun!

I didn’t want to leave when the party was only about to begin but I had another engagement in the city. The energy that night was just pumping, the ambience was great, and the cocktails were to-die-for! I couldn’t remember the last time I genuinely enjoyed myself in a party like that. Maybe it was the sea breeze.

Or maybe it’s just Cowrie Cove. It always had that effect on me ever since. The feeling of being at home... I guess it’s time to rekindle my Sunday sunset habit at the Cowrie Cove. After all, it’s been a while.
