Sunday Essays: A Christmas story

IT HAS only been less than one month after one of the biggest typhoon known as the Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) hit the country, where it led to a huge disaster from buildings collapsing, trees and roofs dangling, businesses shutting and 5, 680 death tolls and counting.

Usually the people are used to this kind of situation and most likely just brush it off and put it in their collection of experiences.

However, this is no ordinary typhoon that can be easily forgotten.

Imagine thousands of families affected and these families have most likely nowhere to go and have no one else to turn to.

Christmas is already in the air, yet, these people are still suffering from financial problems and traumatizing experiences.

Some children have also lost their parents and relatives during the devastating typhoon. How can they ever recover from this tragedy? How can these people ever be?

Since Christmas is the time of giving and loving, this is also the time when heroes and miracles happen.

Besides the Filipinos, people all over the world, whether rich or poor, took part in helping out the victims of Yolanda.

There was this one old man who had become one of the topics and most number of shares in Facebook posts who had nothing to offer but his kindness and generosity, so he donated his one and only pack of ‘Bear brand’ to the victims of the typhoon.

“Pasensya na kaayo gie, mao ra gyud na ako matabang para sa Leyte. Wala-wala gyud ko karon. Pero pwede nimo na itimpla sa mga bata nga naa didto. Ganahan kaayo na sila ana kay ber bran na (This is all I can give to help those in Leyte. I have nothing else. But this can already be made to feed some children. They will love this because it’s Bear Brand),” the old man said as he went up to one of his young neighbors named Angie.

As you can see, it is not only during the Christmas season that God is present but it has always been during the times of tragedy that people become manifestations of God and the true spirit of humanity emerges.

Even during the times of devastation, the people from different countries united as one with the people in the Philippines to help out in the relief operations in the country.

The United States even donated billions of dollars just for the sake of the typhoon victims and so as the other countries.

True enough, people can really unite for one cause especially that this is a time of one giving love, because it is Christmas day.

As what the lyrics in the ‘Kwento ng Pasko’ of the ABS-CBN’s Christmas song says; “Himala ng Pasko ay Hiwaga ng Diyos.” (Fritzy Ruth Gahuman)
