Sunday Essays: DRSUS for quality education

DAVAO Regional State University System (DRSUS) or House Bill 5311, although negatively understood, can be a positive change towards Philippine Education.

DRSUS is one of the most pressing issues that major state universities in Region 11 are now facing. It is an attempt to merge five state universities namely University of South Eastern Philippines, Davao Oriental State College for Science and Technology, Southern Philippines Agribusiness, Marine and Aquatic School of Technology and Davao Del Norte State College.

Institutions will be given a specific educational curriculum, for example engineering and education, to focus on. But in this case it will be difficult for some students who live far because they will allot expenses for boarding house and others.

However, DRSUS is not a stupid idea that many think to be, nor a mere deception of the government to privatize education. It is a brilliant idea to give an orderly, united and in-depth educational planning in Mindanao especially in Davao Region.

If this turned out successfully, it is a sure choice for the surrounding regions in Mindanao.

“Imperialist Manila”- this is the terminology for the seemingly imperial domain of the colleges in Luzon especially in Manila, which has built a name for decades and centuries in giving quality education.

It has always been a notion that those who graduate in these universities are a sure prominent choice for hiring, and those who come from the south are only a second rate choice for companies.

This is what we wanted to change. We want to prove that they are not better than us and we are equally able and competitive to be given equal chance of being hired.

We spent the same number of years going to school although we might not have spent more than they did because things are really quite more expensive in Manila than in provinces. We have graduated with the same course and endured for the same goal - to land in our dream job.

DRSUS is our chance to make this happen.

How?

DRSUS’ first plan is to give a specific university courses to offer. Let’s say, for example, that DRSUS is like making a system that of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

We know that PMA offers only a specific course and all of its graduates to land into that job. PMA, for decades now, has been the source of the country’s prominent and brilliant leaders because of its specific choice of dedication. They were able to make quality graduates.

PMA, also because of its decades of experiences, has a specific set of standards to reach and it has a well- organized and thought- of system that would really get the best out of their students.

One of the reasons why degree holders do not land in their dream job is inferiority.

They have not developed that right self- image because in the first place they were not happy or proud of the university where they came from. Instead of going into the world that they wanted, they waiver from their dreams because they see a seemingly undefeatable competition making them feel downhearted.

This is a pressing fact in the country, and we have to change this mindset.

Whether we like it or not, our school sometimes defines us. If you have confidence in your school then you will also have confidence in yourself. This might not be true to all, but it is true to some, and that makes DRSUS a good step for this region.

DRSUS will create universities like PMA. It might not be that effective and that fast but it will gradually change people’s thinking.

Submerged into a university where the only interest is your course, you will not be attracted to shift into another course. You will have greater amount of focus, and you will have higher standards to beat because your subjects will be equally interrelated.

This way parents’ will also have a specific goal for planning for their children who want to study in a specific course. Since only one university offers an engineering course in the entire region, then that would be their only choice, so they can plan ahead of time.

If this happens, colleges all over the country will have a specific competition in giving quality education in this specific course.

This university competition will create an educational system with higher standards, producing quality graduates, which would result to making that school the best school for a specific course. Degree holders will not be ashamed of themselves ever again.

With developed confidence, graduates will land into the job that they so long wanted without fear from competition because they know that they can.

Not only that they can, but they can do it better. (Cheryl Ann Rosales)
