IT WAS a come from behind victory as the least cheered on, that is because there were very few supporters who could come over and cheer all the way from Digos City, grabbed the top plum in the 5th ABS-CBN Inter-School Newscasting Competition held at the Abreeza Mall last Thursday.
This is the fourth year that the competition was held in cooperation with Sun.Star Davao. The competition too has seen the entry of former winners and finalists into the real world of television journalism, while some other former contestants have become coaches.
Luisito Tinagsa Jr., B.S. Accountancy student of Cor Jesu College of Digos was adjudged the champion in the grand finals that pitted 12 students from eight schools in Davao and Digos Cities.
Tinagsa was also adjudged the Best Delivery in English. His coach was Cyril Marie Saplagio.
At second place is Jandiane Esteban, an AB Masscom student of the Holy Cross of Davao College, who was coached by Katrina Angela Posadas. She also won the Best Delivery in Filipino.
While at third place is early favorite Don Victorio IV Advincula, a BS Accountancy student of the University of the Immaculate Conception. He also copped the Best Delivery in English. His coach was Monique Musni-Tagaytay.
The other schools that fielded their grand finalists, who were picked after two semifinal competitions held at the ABS-CBN Davao th other week were University of the Philippines Mindanao, Holy Cross College of Calinan, Ateneo de Davao University, Gabriel Taborin College of Davao, and University of Mindanao.
The finalists were: Rachell Mae Y. Lubguban of the Holy Cross of Davao College; James S. Labrigas of the UP-Mindanao; Marhll M. Felicilda of Holy Cross College of Calinan; Mary Grace Pelayo and Mahatter T. Mompoc of the ADDU; Jessa Antonette Lumangtad of the UIC; Mark Joel B. de Asis of Gabriel Taborin; Jovelyn L. Davo of Cor Jesu College, and; Anthony L. Rebamonte of the University of Mindanao.
Judges for the grand finals were: Philippine Information Agency 11 Regional Director Efren Elbalbuena, Antonio Luis Escano, operations manager of Abreeza Mall, Raul Alvarez, ABS-CBN Mindanao cluster head Trisha Corpus, and Sun.Star Davao editor-in-chief Stella Estremera.
