MANY children now spend many hours playing computer games. They stay inside the house, sitting the whole day.
My mother only allows us an hour during the weekend to use the computer or Internet. She would always say that it is better to play outdoors.
It will make you healthier, she said.
I read up on it and learned that playing outdoors is really good.
Among the many benefits is that we get sunlight. But there is also the warning to always drink water. Heatstroke is a condition that can make you faint or can even kill, when the sun is very hot.
Outdoor games gives us physical exercise, we can breathe in plenty of fresh air. We also have playmates. Most outdoor games are played as a group. There is the tigso, the hide and seek, and the touch ball that our neighbor’s uncle taught us. It was fun, but can also be tiring. We would always take a break when we start to lose our breathe escaping the ball being thrown at us.
It is in outdoor games also when we learn about sportsmanship. There will always be winners, and that will not be us all the time. We learn to congratulate the winner, we also learn how not to become “pikon”.
Sometimes, however, I have this friend who will really make you “pikon”. He will tell you over and over again that you lost. My mother would always remind me not to be hurt by his words. But sometimes I am.
But having researched about outdoor games, I learned that these are not only necessary for health, it also helps children gain a sense of discipline because we are playing against many others who we touch and hear and talk to. This is not the same in playing computer games, even interactive games, because all you see when playing computer games are the code names of your enemies, and they sometimes use bad words.
